Iran is the fifth main supplier of iron ore to China, according to Keyvan Jafari Tehrani, member of the board of directors of Iran’s Association of Producers and Exporters of Iron Ore.
Jafari Tehrani said that Australia is the biggest exporter of iron ore to China.
In addition to Iran and Australia, South Africa and Brazil are among the main suppliers of iron ore to China, which is regarded as the world’s leading importer of the product, he said.
He blamed the low price of iron ore on the global market on Australia, saying, the cost of production of iron ore for Australia is $80 per ton, while the country exports the product at $45 per ton to global markets.
Last year, Iran produced 49 million tons of iron ore, some 24 million tons of which were exported for less than two billion dollars.
Official data shows that China accounts for more than 90 percent of Iran’s iron ore exports.
